The Long Table, a readers' collective of 305 members, is celebrating its fourth anniversary this September. Founded around a single long table in the autumn of 2022, the club has since read and rated 88 books, two at a time, month after month, with a rest every December. In a typical cycle 117 of its members are actively reading, and every one of those books closed with what the club calls a full-house sitting: an evening where the whole room, having read the book cover to cover, argues about it in person.

The anniversary coincides with the club's monthly selection night. On the 26th of every month, a five-reader committee chaired by Dr Timothy Allen picks the coming month's two books from public submissions and sets the sitting dates the same evening. On 26 September the committee will choose the October books, and the club's fourth year quietly becomes its fifth.

“Four years in, the numbers I am proudest of are the boring ones. Eighty-eight books finished, not skimmed. Three hundred and five names on the roster. And nothing taken from authors, because the moment a writer pays for a review, the review stops being honest.”

The club charges authors nothing at any stage: no submission fee, no listing fee, no pay-to-play tier. It is funded entirely by voluntary pledges from its own readers toward refreshments, with the accounts published to a public ledger each month; the ledger currently carries $38.20 forward into October. When a book is selected, the reward for its author is a house of readers who finish it and leave honest ratings on the retail and review platforms where it is sold, alongside an author evening with the room.

The fifth year holds the club's 100th book, expected in early 2027, a growing programme of author evenings, and the December rest the members have taken every year since the founding. Submissions from authors remain open year-round and free, and new readers can join at any point in the cycle.

Every month on the 26th, the five readers of The Long Table's selection committee, chaired by Dr Timothy Allen, sit down and argue. By the end of the night they have picked the coming month's two books from the public submissions pile, and they have set the sitting dates for both. Their job ends at choosing: the committee never reads on the house's behalf, and if your book is the one chosen, you hear from the club within 48 hours.

The submission itself takes two minutes on the club's website and asks for the basics: title, genre, format, a link, and anything the author wants the committee to know. There is no fee at any point and no list a writer can buy onto. Every submission is read by the committee in the first week of the month, and every author receives a reply by the 10th, a real reply rather than a confirmation bot. Print, ebook and audiobook are all eligible, and self-published titles sit in the same pile as everything else.

What a selected author receives is unusual in the current landscape. One hundred and seventeen active readers commit to finishing the book, not sampling it. The book closes with a full-house sitting where the author is invited to be present for an evening of questions. Honest ratings appear on the platforms where the book is sold. And the thing the author is never asked for is money.

“We are not a review service, we are a room. Authors cannot pay us, which is exactly why the prize is worth having: a hundred-plus readers who will actually finish your book and say what they honestly thought, where it is sold.”

The next selection night falls on Saturday 26 September 2026, when the October books will be chosen and their sitting dates fixed. Submissions are open now and remain open every month of the year except the December rest.

The club's running costs are equally transparent. It charges authors nothing and charges readers no membership fee; refreshments are covered by voluntary pledges from members, and the ledger is published monthly on the site, currently carrying $38.20 into October 2026.
